Fierceton had also brought her mentor, a staff member at the university's Civic House, into the meeting; at the outset Winkelstein told the woman she could not speak or she would be disconnected immediately. The 23-year-old planned to use. Within a year of her arrest, another St. Louis-area hospital had granted her admitting privileges, and she was able to resume her medical career. On Saturday afternoon, Fierceton said she found herself in a Zoom meeting for several hours with 10 other finalists from this region. And we had a fairly lengthy conversation, just kind of going through the ins and outs of my childhood and left it at, she was like: OK, I understand now and Im just going to leave this. Like, those two things dont fit together. RG: Interesting. The reporter had assumed based on her status as a FGLI student which stands for first-generation, low-income that she had been poor her entire life. I tried to help as much as I could. Did she lie? But teachers noticed that Fierceton often seemed physically uncomfortable in her mother's presence, and a close friend noted that she was often injured. How many covert wars, miscarriages of justice, and dystopian technologies would remain hidden if our reporters werent on the beat? And I think its true. She had wanted to appeal the Rhodes committee's findings, but Rafaelle advised her that Penn had hinted to him that it might consider referring the matter to federal prosecutors on the grounds that she had lied about being FGLI on her Free Application for Federal Student Aid form. [2], Morrison's arrest had been reported in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,[6] where commenters on the online version of the story took her side, speculating that Fierceton was "an entitled brat" who had vengefully fabricated charges that had the potential to end her mother's medical career. I cant remember if it was in the Rhodes essay or in another essay that, in hindsight, you wouldve tightened up. Mackenzie Fierceton has lost her Rhodes Scholarship and her University of Pennsylvania master's degree is being held after an anonymous tipster called out alleged inaccuracies in her school and scholarship applications.NY Post photo composite Fierceton said that when she had applied to SP2 as a sophomore she had cleared it with the school's associate director of admissions, who told her that a student's biological parents were not relevant to that definition, and said the same thing in 2020 (Penn's OSC interviewed the associate director and SP2's associate director for financial aid whom Fierceton said she had a similar conversation with; neither remembered speaking with Fierceton about the issue)[1]:111112). Right. And so was it later, in a different conversation where they asked about the line in the essay about not being able to recognize yourself or is there some illusion to that in the transcript that you found? Fierceton wished that she had been more willing to correct mistaken impressions that she might have made and at the time "just kind of crumbled behind the pressure. RG: Or whatever our kind of contemporary version of it is. Two weeks into the school year, she realized she had been wrong. Fierceton wrote to SP2 dean Sara Bachman complaining about the interview, saying she felt "worthlessness, hopelessness, and shame" for a week afterwards. RG: And I just want to read this for people. And then very quickly turn to very specific questions about different instances of abuse. And its funny, cause it just made me so frustrated and I actually went back and read it. Yes, it may be true that institutions like UPenn give students like Fierceton opportunities because of their story, but that does not mean her narrative is theirs for the taking. RG: And do you know Linda Tirado? It was literally just like: She was arrested and her daughter is hospitalized. Mhmm. Smith said he believed the university had decided before it began investigating that Fierceton's abuse allegations were false and that she had fabricated them with the goal of finding an easier way into Penn or another elite school. MF: I mean, part of it is honestly like its looking at cause we just wanted to be as thorough as possible of when [laughs] I was crying, and then I was crying and taking breaths. "Fuck thatI don't have [a family]" she said later. [2][e], A spokesman for the D.A. MF: Yeah. Yeah. "[20][m] A syndicated morning radio show named Fierceton its "donkey of the day". Our concern is instead with the conduct of our. I identify with the FGLI umbrella term and definitely being a low-income student, but Ive never really called myself a standalone first-generation. And then I remembered that my teacher had told me to write a gratitude list. In a 25-minute conversation, she went into detail with Fierceton about her past and what she planned to do with her scholarship. You know, I believe the first people who said that was the Rhodes Trust. And then The New Yorker adds in parentheses that a Penn spokesperson says: Yeah, well, thats not the definition that we use. So not that I think at all the population of kids who are in foster care is representative of what abuse or neglect and what households they occur or dont occur in. [2], Over the middle of 2020, Fierceton became active in the Black Lives Matter protests at Penn. And whats the difference between the U.S. and English system? There were some pretty basic errors, such as my name, my birth name, and my birth place, and claiming that I didnt have a sibling, that I wasnt low-income, a lot of facts that were pretty easily disputed. RG: so that people have the background there. Both reports refrained from expressing an opinion about the truth of her abuse allegations. box, it's like you have to fit yourself in, saying: Are you the first in your family to attend? She was one of only 32 high school students selected from a pool of 2300 applicants. Teachers and parents at Whitfield had donated new clothing and school supplies for her. And how much confidence do you have that that anonymous complainer was Carrie, your biological mother. They took photographs of Caster's staircases and elevators, and interviewed witnesses and some of the Penn paramedics who had responded. The kind of reporting we do is essential to democracy, but it is not easy, cheap, or profitable. What happened after you went out of the hospital? After her graduation summa cum laude, political science professor Anne Norton invited Fierceton to stay with her and her partner in their large house in Northwest Philadelphia for as long as she needed to in order to complete her master's over the next year. And I think that she kind of encompassed a lot of the stereotypes that people, and also the Penn administrators have about what FGLI students are when in reality, those of us who are part of the community know that theres so many shapes and sizes of FGLI students. And its funny, cause it just made me so frustrated and I actually went back and read it. In April, the trust's investigative committee produced a 15-page report praising Fierceton as "gifted, driven, and charismatic" but concluding ultimately that she "created and repeatedly shared false narratives about herself", noting in particular her references to injuries she was treated for in her September 2014 hospital stay that are not reflected in her medical records. RG: Mhmm. . And it was also the community was kind of divided. So, I myself, had a seizure in the basement of my grad school in January, 2020, and it took over an hour to get me out of the basement because they couldnt fit a stretcher or a backboard down the stairs or the elevator. It recommended the scholarship be rescinded. MF: Yeah. And to me, Im like I am a household of one, so I am the only person in my family. And did they say anything along those lines? Is it as well explored territory as a school-to-prison pipeline? RG: Who will spend some significant amount of time in poverty. RG: Right. In the transcript, I wrote it was really just focused on: What happened the night you went into foster care? Another program official that year recalls Fierceton as seeming more vulnerable than she let on; after picking her up from the hospital following bone surgery that year, she noticed that Fierceton had a very light winter coat and few other possessions. [f] Fierceton felt no ambivalence about her answer. Yes, to my lawyer who communicated it to me. Her mothers name was entered into a registry of abusers. "She lies better than I can tell the truth. MF: But yeah, that, I guess, just one point of clarification that I recently, in the last few months, just found out about. She also alleged that Penn had on many occasions failed to follow its own disciplinary policies in its investigation of her.[16]. In 2020, former foster child Mackenzie Fierceton received a Rhodes Scholarship as a self-identified first generation, low income student at the University of Pennsylvania. My life is over, Im in the hospital, Im at rock bottom. She added the additional detail that at the time of her first hospitalization, Fierceton had just failed her first AP Chemistry test. She retained two lawyers to represent her pro bono; they talked to Morrison themselves, who told them she still loved her daughter and wanted her to come home. RG: That they would forward charges to the federal government of wire fraud. Is it as well explored territory as a school-to-prison pipeline? ", Morrison said. MF: And that is, I felt very defeated too. We need to stay on task. Which as Im sure youve learned since is a complete and fundamental misunderstanding of poverty . And especially, again, like these stereotypes of black and brown, low-income families, the knee-jerk reaction is like: Oh, well, theyre unequipped to be a parent. By the end of the year she was in a third foster home. Cause I had assumed it was her. The father's message was forwarded to Penn's general counsel, Wendy White, who got in touch with Morrison. So you applied for your masters in social work and there was a question of whether to check the, what Ive learned is called the FGLI box: first-generation, low-income. And then to be so unanimously disbelieved and, at that point, this article was like a paragraph and a half. Its, in my opinion, because they get overlooked and the kids like me are kind of rendered invisible by the privileges of our biological families. I have some of my own theories, but I want to hear yours. You know, in my personal experience, there were not very many kids who came from a background like me. And I didnt get an answer. Fierceton was mentioned in the complaint as having experienced similar issues following her seizure; she was deposed in the suit in March 2021, the month before the university's investigation led her to withdraw from the Rhodes Scholarship. MF: She, to my knowledge, has stuck by that. And many more vicious sentiments. Whereas a social worker comes into a poor home and looks around and sees just the normal poverty that our system has foisted on people and says: Oh, well, clearly this is somebody that needs to be stripped out of here. And she had gone to a private school growing up. RG: And so where is your story now? As youve had time to sort through this, what do you think was driving Penn to go through this process, which they had to know, at some level, would cost them? Right. [23] In mid-April, Penn released Fierceton's master's degree. I wrote a poem about the actual what the message was, which is so cheesy and Im cringing at my 17-year-old self [laughs], but it was about the healing power of gratitude. It quotes her as saying "If you find me dead, it was my mom. RG: And so if its a well-educated white girl from a private school, thats way too close to home for a lot of these elites. And at the time I was more in panic mode than like, let me step back and look at this logically, theres absolutely no case, this is an intimidation tactic to try to silence me and sign this NDA and withdraw from the Rhodes and agree to whatever terms they wanted me to agree to you. MF: So [laughs] I feel like I could go on for hours about that. [2], Brandt interviewed Morrison, who described herself and her daughter as "two peas in a pod". [2], In the early 2000s the couple went through a protracted divorce during which a guardian ad litem was appointed to represent their daughter's interests at the custody hearing. But its relevant to financial aid and the student should check whatever box is going to give them most access to financial aid, which would be yes to both questions. While Kerr noted that Fierceton's three weeks in the hospital was far longer than might be expected given the bruises that led to her admission, she also noted the absence of injuries to Fierceton's back despite having reportedly fallen or being thrown downstairs. [24], In a statement to The Daily Pennsylvanian, the university said the New Yorker article "did not accurately reflect" the university's investigation of the issues raised by the Rhodes Trust. And then the other question was: Are you the first in your family to attend college? Now anyone who earns that distinction is to be commended, but the article also noted that Mackenzie had aged out of foster care . RG: And The New Yorker article also alluded to a few things that you had gotten loose with in a couple of paragraphs. Our grad school had no specific definitions or instructions, but I did have a relationship with the associate director of admissions at the time. The university, in its response to Mackenzies lawsuit, referred to Mackenzies mother as an accomplished physician and claimed that a court had found her allegations not to be credible. After the trial ended with Morrison prevailing and the agency ordered to remove her name from the child-abuse registry, Fierceton resolved to change her last name. Some people were very much on my side; some people were very much, I think, in that sort of cognitive dissonance of: This cant be true because if it can, then Im in danger. "Without her trauma, she didnt matter", wrote a commentator in the Tulane Hullabaloo. She entered foster care only at the age of 17, after making a complaint of abuse against Dr. Morrison a complaint that a court later found not to be credible. When I came to Penn and saw all of these students who were living that life, there was a sense of community and solidarity amongst us, which was very powerful for me because I just felt so out of place. Fierceton grew up in a wealthy community and attended an elite private school in a St. Louis suburb. "I had so much anger and grief, and I didn't want them to be affiliated in any way with this new life I was building. "They are the people that support you, look out for you, & love you unconditionally. [2], In public, while she was at Whitfield, Morrison and her daughter seemed to evoke the Gilmore Girls, echoing that television series's main characters, a single mother and her precocious daughter with a close and strong relationship. There, she wandered the hallways until she found the history teacher, and collapsed. And I think its striking to read that back and just see how clearly distressed and distraught I was in continuing to push on that series of questions about a really traumatic experience. RG: Right. Im part of a wrongful death lawsuit that was filed in August, 2020. It was more, I think, in the times after and the months after where I ended up like giving different medical records and all of these things to corroborate my account, but there were a few questions that were very specific to what had happened. And that felt very powerful in an institution where the overwhelming majority of people are coming from two-parent households, extremely wealthy, like a whole nother level of wealth that I have really ever seen, in my life in terms of just around me, like the 1 percent to the 0.001 percent. Raised in Chesterfield, Missouri, a West County suburb of St. Louis, she attended and graduated from the Whitfield School in Creve Coeur. That would have to be the rationale that they would have for those childhood journals to be faked. RG: And what was the first-generation community like on campus? Because that was one of the ones that really blew my mind. woman who won a coveted scholarship in the US to study at Oxford after claiming she was poor, overcame childhood abuse and grew up in foster care lost the opportunity after it emerged she was. And then as the different internships, and then I went to get my masters in social work and all of this happened, I started to see that continue in different capacities while I was in different roles, seeing that theme in this relationship between foster care and the criminal justice system. She chose Fierceton from a list of names she had come up with herself that projected strength, and a petition to the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia was accepted. And so that was when it really transitioned, the second half of it, into these really intimate questions about my abuse until the point where I was sobbing and couldnt answer the questions anymore. Fierceton was living off-campus by then, but she and her roommates decided to leave their apartment. What happened the night before? so that people have the background there. But I think a lot of it stems from the current policies and practices of federal and local funding and what kind of programs theyre funding for kids. Fierceton clarified the details in question and Ruderman said she understood better. She had bruises all over her body in different stages of healing an obvious sign of child abuse.. And especially, again, like these stereotypes of black and brown, low-income families, the knee-jerk reaction is like: Oh, well, theyre unequipped to be a parent. The fact that they even challenged that really does expose a lot of whats going on here because I assume in their mind, theyre saying: Well, she went to this private school; she had a nice house; her mom probably drove a nice car maybe you even drove a decent car! [Laughs.]. Penn again spoke with Morrison and, this time as well, the St. Louis County prosecutor who had decided to drop the charges, without informing Fierceton, which the university defended as standard practice not to identify witnesses interviewed. MF: Yeah. But Mackenzie Fierceton is not a liar. And if you read it aloud, its almost exactly the length of the phone call. [2], Fierceton refused, and a week before she withdrew from the Rhodes Scholarship, Penn's Office of Student Conduct (OSC) notified Fierceton it, too, would be investigating. And we have this idea of what a person looks like who commits a crime or who gets arrested for child abuse. MF: Absolutely. Mackenzie Fierceton: Yeah. Period." Beth Winkelstein, at the time Penn's deputy provost, signed off on her application for the school, writing that "Mackenzie understands what it is like to be an at-risk youth, and she is determined to re-make the systems that block rather than facilitate success. MF: So to me it was pretty clear that it likely came from them. The teacher recalled that she had black eyes and hair matted with blood, a description corroborated by a nurse who saw her on arrival after an ambulance brought her to nearby Mercy Hospital St. Louis. @RachelAviv for @NewYorker Thats the reality of it, but we dont want to think of it that way. And in the U.S., there is much more pressure to pull kids out of homes, right? RG: Anything in particular jump out at you after having read back over that transcript? [22] It went into greater detail about her past, providing more substantiation for her abuse allegations from teachers, fellow students and their parents, Carrie Brandt (the police detective who had investigated and arrested Morrison) and her allegations that Morrison had enabled Lovelace's sexual abuse. And theyll openly talk about this. Because processes become Kafkaesque very quickly. Professor Walter Licht, a Penn historian who runs the program, recalls her as the sort of student who would "[ask] a question that makes everyone stop and brings the conversation to a different pitch." And I was actually really nervous about doing any press for this reason. MF: Yeah. Theyre not on a website. In 2019, Fierceton testified in a court hearing that, in September 2014, her mother allegedly pushed her down a set of stairs and hit her in the face several times. One of them, to me, felt pretty clear that it was probably from someone in my biological family, because it had photos of me; it had very specific information that very few people would have and I dont think many people would have random childhood photos of me. In addition to reiterating many of the themes of comments made by her and her supporters in the previous articles, including criticism of the Rhodes and Penn investigations (the former of which Grim noted she was putting air quotes around when she mentioned it), she expressed a belief that her story had triggered a defensive anxiety in women like Finkelstein and White:[4]. Penn's report notes that Fierceton disputes this account. So, yes, an article came out in the local paper saying that she had been arrested. And that is, I felt very defeated too. You had mentioned that you actually made a transcript of your interview with Deputy Provost Finkelstein shortly after the conversation. The reporter had assumed based on her status as a FGLI student which stands for first-generation, low-income that she had been poor her entire life. [2], Fierceton moved into the first of several foster homes, with one other foster sibling and two biological children of the foster parents. In The New Yorker article, one teacher had written: She showed up at my classroom door with a bloodied and battered face and then fainted., RG: And then, Rachel Aviv, the reporter also quotes Sherry McClain, who was a nurse who was assigned to you, she said: She had two black eyes, and her hair was full of blood. [2], In July the OSC concluded its investigation with a 31-page report sent to provost Wendell Pritchett examining Fierceton's background more extensively than the Rhodes Trust had. It, too, alleged that Fierceton was misrepresenting herself as having been poor and grown up entirely in foster care, with many photos of Fierceton as a little girl on the beach and riding horses, and other activities usually associated with affluence. What happened the night you ended up in foster care? So Rachel had it and Penn disputed it. That evening that the article came out is when I got a call from the reporter saying: I got this anonymous email that said X, Y, Z, and I wanted to let you know. woman who won a coveted scholarship in the US to study at Oxford after claiming she was poor, overcame childhood abuse and grew up in foster care lost the opportunity after it emerged she was. One trigger for the beatings was sexual abuse by one of her mother's boyfriends, Henry Lovelace, Jr., a fitness trainer and multiple winner of the Missouri's Strongest Man competition in his weight class, which her mother warned her never to talk about. RG: I want to talk about where you think that pushback came from. He died of his heart attack within 12 minutes of arrival at the hospital. It didnt, though, to the University of Pennsylvania. I think they have said, well, theres different definitions and the dean who is the dean of the grad school said: Well, thats not our definition. RG: First of all, thats one box? Right. If you speak, Im going to disconnect you from the call. Fierceton considered dropping out, but "if I truly can't do this, where am I supposed to return to? And I told them I only have a half-hour, because Im working, Im in class, and were going to go through all of this. Its account focused on the Rhodes controversy, discussing her and Driver's suits near the end, and recalling some other recent instances of academic dishonesty, including one 2009 Harvard student whose largely fabricated high school records were only discovered when he had applied for a Rhodes Scholarship. And so they had to see some benefit to them in doing this. Penn, she claimed, had leaked that information to the Inquirer whose editor-in-chief was married to Louisa Shepard, the university's news director, whom she named as a defendant along with Finkelstein, White, and the university's board of trustees. Later, another Whitfield parent Morrison had talked to told this woman that she believed Fierceton had done this to get admitted to an Ivy League college, an idea which she found preposterous. Cause Ive just wanted to go on with my life and, you know, live it. Teachers at Whitfield who had been supportive while she was there dropped out of touch. So I was like: OK, fine. And in the U.S., there is much more pressure to pull kids out of homes, right? And you saw that playing out right away, right, when your biological mother was first arrested? [5] Lovelace was also arrested and charged with sexual abuse. We want to think of it as: If you were ever rich, youre always rich; if youre ever poor, youre always poor. Even though I had, again, written statements from two ICU nurses who took care of me saying: Yes, there was blood, [laughs] theres photographs, and there still was the argument of like, there wasnt enough blood or your face wasnt so distorted you could couldnt tell who you were. But it did open with these literary elements of what I was feeling like, and the experience I was having in those moments. She was an independent student when she applied. Penn also noted that her name change had the effect, whether she had intended it or not, of making her background harder to research. She wasn't poor and grew up in a wealthy household with a successful mother. Within days of the article being published, the universitys general counsel was in touch with Mackenzies mother. And you experienced that yourself, right? MF: verbally. My understanding is there were two anonymous emails. And then theres also foster siblings in the sense of other people who are in the foster care system who youre living with. I identify with the FGLI umbrella term and definitely being a low-income student, but I've never really called myself a standalone first-generation. Like what does Penn say when you tell them: Hey, the Penn official who helped me fill this out said that these are the categories that I fit. RG: So one of the questions that you mentioned that they asked was about your essay , RG: which, correct me if Im wrong, but I think it begins saying something along the lines of: Youre in the hospital, you looked in the mirror, and you couldnt recognize yourself, you couldnt recognize your features. One home, during her junior year of high school, was so "toxic" and crammed with other foster kids that she left for weeks at a time, sleeping each night on a carousel of couches at the homes of various friends, she said.
